2025 Update: La Paisanita Taqueria Deli

La Paisanita Taqueria Deli is what started it all.

I was in Dallas for business when I had some time before catching my flight back to Los Angeles and needed to get something to eat. I passed a couple gas station taco places on the way to La Paisanita after I decided I wanted to see if the pace that started my obsession with gas station tacos still was a favorite.

Everything was immediately familiar as I pulled into the Chevron station to park . Except it wasn’t a Chevron station. It was a Mobile now.

Fortunately, the taqueria was unchanged. It even looked like the same menu from 14 years ago. I was keeping things simple, mostly because I knew I really loved the carne asada tacos and I wasn’t that hungry as it was an early 3pm “dinner” before heading to DFW airport.

I ordered and waited a few minutes for my clamshell Styrofoam container and asked for the salsa verde and roja. The tortillas were brought to life on the griddle with some oil and and the carne asada filled the stack of tacos waiting to be devoured. It came with some onions and jalapeño like before a big juicy lime wedge.

I poured on some salsa and enjoyed a long awaited first bite wondering will this live up to the memory and glory my memory had built up for it over the decade plus distance. Was this just the stomach growing fonder with time like an old flame? Or was it really a memory worth experiencing over and over again?

I’m happy to share it was the latter. The tacos here are executed flawlessly. The tortillas and salsas really bring it home. And while I kept it pretty boring going only with the carne asada, the meat was cooked perfectly, lean and enjoyable until the final bite.

It’s great to know La Paisanita is as reliable as its name meaning “old countrywoman”. Like an old countrywoman, the tacos here are dependable and traditional with a confidence not much will ever change other than what giant corporate gas station occupies the home of this excellent gas station taco stand.
